Title: Second Coming Fighter's Guide
Post by: Shotoman on January 29, 2011, 01:31:59 AM
I've been wanting to find some way to contribute to one of the big MUGEN projects, but I can't do sprites, I can't code, and I can't do music.  BUT!  I think I found some way I can contribute.  I think I may have--I can make a fighter's guide to the game.  Here's a preview--I have Cable's pages complete.

Note: I know the attack images are fuzzy.  I captured them large, then shrunk them down in InDesign directly, so I'm gonna shrink them down in an actual image editing program and replace them by the next time I post.

My original captures are actually quite good, I just didn't realize that InDesign doesn't cleanly scale down that far :)

That said, some capturing help would be appreciated.  It takes a lotta time to do.

InDesign scale the images perfectly, but its not a drawing program.

Programs like Photoshop, when you resize the image, redo the pixels to make a smooth image, putting pixels where you don't have it.
Illustrator and InDesign don't, and its the thing to do.

But are you having problems with InDesign resize? It works perfectly for me.

If you need any help with InDesign, drops me a line. I use it professionaly.

this is actually a pretty neat idea. its like the console fighters when they have fighter guides to the games. heck if you could put together a nice size crew yall could actually go around and make mugen fighter guides. just saying and think its a neat idea.

@ Illusionista

Thanks for the offer, I'll take you up on that if I have major problems--But on further study, the loss seems to come from the way I created the final render.  It defaulted to a lossy JPG style, and I simply need to render it without loss.  It's the little things that mess you up  :-??

The biggest thing that would help me would be capturing the images themselves.  It's fairly easy, but time consuming.  If anybody's interested, here's a list of what every character page needs:

6 at-rest images--each in a different color
Taunt
Throw(s)
9 punches (3 standing, 3 crouching, 3 jumping)
9 kicks (same as above)
An image of each special move.
Two images for most Hypers--one showing the 'power flash,' so you can recognize it, an the other of the move in action.

I myself will play the game and figure out the strategies, combo chains etc. but the images themselves will be the biggest pain.  Make sure they are larger than neccesary.  I'd rather scale the image down than up.

Also, brief history writups of the characters--like what I got on Cable's first page, would be great, too, and if anybody out there would volunteer to draw a cover image (preferably featuring all the player characters with a shadowy hint of Bastion) I'd appreciate it.  The current stand in is the "All will unite" poster, which will work, but I'd like something--personalilzed, I guess.  (Remember, Rogue will be the modern version in a later update, so draw her that way.)

InDesign isn't the problem, it's the pdf (all pdfs).

now I got the pdf.

Its a great idea, for sure.

Some tips:

- Do not use JPEG, use PNG 24-bits instead. JPG images are always crunched (even if you use the 12 - maximum - quality). Its related with the way JPEG images are done (it makes small blocks and make a optmized area with few colors).

- You can resize at InDesign, but its better to make it on photoshop

- When exporting, do not choose things like WEB, Smallest Size, etc. The default value will be fine.

- Check the JPG compression under pdf settings. If you wanna make they smaller, use ZIP compression(not on the file, but on the images).

Well, I simply re-imported it with the no-loss options and a higher definition, and now it actually looks pretty.     ;*))

Here's the new one: http://www.2shared.com/document/1Yg7IBD4/SecondCommingGuide.html (http://www.2shared.com/document/1Yg7IBD4/SecondCommingGuide.html)

No new material, but definitely improved over the last one.  I'll use PNG from now on, but unless they appear really obviously superior to my Cable images, I'll keep his pages the same...

Bad news everyone.  I have been working on the guide, but my computer basically died and I lost all my captures and base files and etc. so I'd basically have to start completely over.  I really really don't have it in me to do that on my own. Please, please, please help me get screencaps and such.  Maybe even sprite sheets.  I really need help if I wanna finish this project.

It's alright, in the interum we've developed a pdf file game manual. It's not as graphic intensive as the one you were working on but it's very informative.

I really feel bad enough about the loss to need a lecture on backing up...

Trust me, this was a big lesson on that.

And where's this manual, Acey?  I'd like to take a look at it.
