Photoshop CS3 Help

Hey, I'm new to using photoshop. I was wondering.... if I have a pic with a white background and I wanna make it transperant, how do I do that?

once you clean that up with magic eraser or regluar eraser save as either png, gif, bmp but recommended .gif cause it saves space and when your using eraser theirs an option on the top to use either brush or pencil choose pencil for better results
