There are a lot of comic book fans on this forum, so I'm going to start posting and sharing some background sketches, because I'm sure interesting comments will come up that can help me develop better stages.

First, an advanced design that I had saved for a long time. In this case, it's The Negative Zone (from MARVEL Comics).
I did it at the request of RobsonMSH for their future Annihilus and Blastaar char projects. I hope at some point he can pick them up because those first sprites looked amazing.


The following is a new stage design that I was able to put together very quickly and simply. It is something like the roof of the Princess Bar in Madripoor Lowtown (MARVEL again). There are many graphic details to correct and add, such as the advertising billboards, that I think are in Chinese and should be mix it up and expand it to English, French or Cantonese, which as I understand are the main languages ​​in Madripoor.
Daken and Viper are not going to be part of the background, they are just a reference.

I really like Negative Zone, but it lacks animation. The floor looks very jpegish compared to the usual MvC/SF3 stuff.

Madripoor seems unpopulated... there are no lights, gunshots, smoke or anything that is a giveaway of a never sleeping place.

Btw, here's a sprite rip I had laying around. Maybe you can make better use of it :)

Thanks for your comments Navs.

The Negative Zone will have some animations, such as rocks or asteroids moving and rotating. Plus some stars in space shining and twinkling. But I'm not sure to add some insectoids flying around.

About Madripoor, you're right, it's all very quiet. I had already considered, effects of lights and smoke, but now I am going to keep in mind to add people to the scene.

I had forgotten about that FF3 billboard, it might be useful.

I'm also going to show another easy edit that came out pretty quickly. I always thought Charlotte's Palace stage in Samurai Shodown 2 was ideal for setting up a Hellfire Club related scenario. And considering that two very good characters (Selene and Sebastian Shaw) have been in development for some time, it seemed good to create a suitable place for them.
As always, this is just a preview and probably has modifications.
The characters are not part of the background, they're just a reference.

Cool idea. I feel like you can use the people from Demitri's stages that are dancing with masks on in the background. Maybe someone playing the piano or a few hellfire soldiers acting as guards. I see a lot of possibilities. Also, Wizzywhipitwonderful made me a Sebastian Shaw CPS2 theme long time ago that I reckon you can find on his youtube channel. I think that theme fits this stage 100%.

I had already shown some image in the MUGEN forums of this background concept. It is the Bar With No Name that appears in MARVEL comics and more recently in M.O.D.O.K. TV series.
So here is a simple video of the stage in action without many details. The idea is still to fill the second level, the bar, with cameos from C-class villains. And Kimczi is giving me a hand with that.

Yes, I know, another Sentinel factory ... but it's my own version. May be Trask Industries?

Actually the stage arose and was being built around the Master Mold sprites that I ripped from Konami's X-Men game. So what better environment than the beginning of the development of the Sentinels.
I would like Master Mold to reveal itself from the shadows as the factory lighting comes on. And maybe give it a 3D effect, I have to test how it looks with the rest of the layers.

The big urban park of Manhattan, NY. It is a simple sketch oriented towards the universe of MARVEL comics. Provisional stage name: Trouble in Central Park
Right now I'm not really sure about Squirrel Girl's cameo, which appears behind the tree (in the style of MK2's Living Forest). And probably do an alternate version at night, although this bg is already quite dark.

Another stage on the way. A warehouse or port area where Batman's C-class villains gather. A likely name is Unknowns Of Gotham.
It will be a background with a logic similar to "Bar With No Name" but in the Gotham universe of DC Comics. The second level is going to be populated with cameos from lesser and unknown foes provided by Kimczi, again.



And a quick new look at the Ares (DC Comics) stage.

So this is going to be something like Domains Of Ares. I did not take into account a strong reference, rather several such as "The Areopagus Hill" from the pre-crisis comics, "The Bastion of War & Death" from DCUO and my whimsical interpretation of the character.

A possible background for Trigon that is on the way. This represents something like the arrival of the extra-dimensional demon on planet earth.
Some details that I plan to add are urban debris and flames around the scene. The portal is going to be animated but I am not sure about the temple of Azarath that is seen behind...

I started working on some backgrounds with Navs41 & The Unlimited.
In this case, the stage is inspired by the Catwoman comic of the same name.
When In Rome.


One more background, Pretty Dolls Parlor.
The stage has a strong inspiration from the game "Batman: Arkham Knight - The Perfect Crime" side mission. In theory, it could have a second level where players fall into Porfessor Pig's hideout / laboratory / operating room.

Going back to MARVEL a bit ... I recently built this background for the upcoming Blade MUGEN char that is being developed by Clint.
As a provisional name it is called Blade's Safe Ground. :-??

I think there isn't a proper stage for Miguel O'Hara. So this is my early attempt to recreate the Alchemax megacorporation in the future.

Some time ago I had the intention of making some stages for JUS-style characters because I always saw videos with disproportionate backgrounds that did not adapt to "Pocket" or "Chibi" size. Coincidentally, Rotsopmi contacted me with a similar concern, so we both started developing a series of stages for this kind of chars.

An early sketch of what could be a bg for Doctor Octopus.
A modern laboratory seems more appropriate to me instead of a "retro" one for a nuclear physicist like Octavius.

A few months ago I started collaborating with Robson Oliveira / RobsonMSH and team in his "MARVEL War Of Gems" MUGEN proyect. A 16-bit style fighting game inspired by its SNES counterpart that CAPCOM released in 1996.
In this video you can see some backgrounds that I was doing, spy on part of the character roster and check the game mechanics that were already advanced.

Another video showing more backgrounds that I was making for this project. You can also see the new chars that joined the roster and the BGM with a lot of SNES flavor.
The game is still in an early phase but soon Robson Oliveira will be in charge of releasing a playable Alpha version.

I like the Overdose Superman that JARRO77 did for MUGEN and I love the original story behind the char much more. All this prompted me to think of an appropriate stage for him. Here my first sketch.
