Finished, Not Perfect

The most important advice I can give to creators.

"The world wants and it needs people who finish things."

I feel that advice is too oversimplified.
No need to stress out about it not being perfect & finish, that's ok, everyone has to start somewhere & finish is important....but you only become "naturally" better if you have at least some sense of self improvement/self criticism.

Being too hard on yourself may be discouraging, but not having any is just as bad, still see some people not improving over the years. It needs to be balanced.

Feedback helps too btw, but ultimately, your own standards is what decides.

I don't think this in any way can help anybody. maybe a better thing would be to say practice a lot and u will get better because that's really the truth. but alice said it best. to get better at anything in life you need determination and really try hard and practice. you need to learn from your mistakes and correct them as you go, if you don't see improvement from one thing to the next, then you not putting yourself into it. the best artists in the world had to start from zero and practice got them where they are at today.

Now i think everyone has their limit. It should be the best it can be within their means.

For example, I have a project with 10 characters. I could not do these projects with sprites as good as the verz, loganir and other artists.

It would be at least 3 to 4 years per character. But your can make a simpler style that developed faster, it is WHAT I do the best possible way

well, mugen works different beto. because its not just about the nice sprites. the coding counts a lot too. and characters depend on the time you got free to work on them. that's why I decided to just sprite :)
I like the art part more than anything from characters. making a game its not easy, look how long I got still spritting stuff for msh2. u can try also asking for help and permission to use characters that might fit your game.

Exactly o'que I meant. I ordered characters for some people, just loganir answer. There was no answer from other people, but the project continued anyway  :-??

I feel that Mugen is a prime example of this principle, which is why I thought to post this here. So many people never finish their work, particularly sprites. There is great value in being able to finish something and seeing it through from the beginning to the end. The more you do it the better you get.

For example, Loganir's first character was Bane and it was pretty light on the sprite editing. Compare that to where he is now with his latest releases. He only go to this point by completing and improving. On so many levels each new character was better than the prior one.

This is a great video to help others get motivated. I currently have 3 characters that are ready to go. Unfortunately I'm not a coder so I cant get them out myself. "O" is currently working on and finishing Croc. 1 other character is in the 90% range to finish and the other in the 80%.

Even though I dont have a coder I still finish the sprites. I hope that some would do the same. If it ever comes down to it and I cant find someone I will just post the sprites and let anyone use them as they please. After that I will just move on to the the next character.

Some who never finish there work have legitimate reasons for doing so. But others I think just lack the motivation. It's good to see what they've done but it's sad when you never hear from them again. I hope this video will help others to see that not everything has to be perfect. Put your work out there listen to constructive criticism. Learn from them. You'll be surprised how good you will get from just that.

when it comes to mugen, I think its not that people don't finish their wips because of perfect. its more because of time. time its what plays the larger role in allowing a person to finish or not a project.

Great video. While I don't do the work that all of you are into, I can relate with my music--it has to be a specific way for me...a fully fleshed-out piece of music. There are some themes I just put together quickly and they sound good, and there are others where I dig deep into the character.

I'll keep this in mind so I don't overwork myself in the future.

Caring about stuff being good can also decide if they finish a mugen project or not.
Producing quality stuff generally will take you more time than making something without caring about it, and a longer period of time implies more chances to have a change of priorities.

Anyway, you can't really measure each thing the same way, mugen is generally a hobby, something you do by your own volition, you can choose whether to care or not about being good and take all the time you want, abandon a project for years just because, then just re-take it like that.

And you do it for yourself(supposedly), not to please others, like I mentioned before, it's an own standards thing, you want your stuff being good, GOOD. If you enjoy your stuff being subpar, then that's ok as well, just don't expect people with higher standards than you to like it.

Now let's put something in which some money is involved (likely people who are artists as profession). Like a comission, someone comissions you some concept art, sprites....or just coding something because mugen, (I'm avoiding more serious examples  since I'd be tapping into other subjects), you have to worry about it being good(or enough acceptable, depending of payment) AND finish(unless you have terrible work ethics?), now imagine you hand over some below average stuff  and your client tells you your work is terrible and wants his/her money back, or that they will never comission you again and stuff.

So, my stance on it is BOTH.
Try to produce quality stuff each time AND finish. Not just one or another. You probably will end seeing a lot of flaws your previous works as you improve, but I don't think that's inherently bad, it's kind of an usual artist thing. If you don't, that means you either didn't improve or it was good since beginning(not impossible but uncommon).

I agree with Alice 100% I have the tendency to go over almost all of my work if I do not think it is up to par. I take all the all the critique I get and have applied it over the tears I have been a pixel artist and still hope to grow. Still, finishing something is good but you end up hating it as time goes by.

This and some many other things mentioned by others too like what Alice said. A lot plays into the part of actually finishing it . Some take years others just months. If you got the time to dedicate to the hobby to complete it and do it good then cool.  Plus practice , practice and more practice along the way. Great post on this fellas. 👍
