256-Color Conversion help, plus intro help.
« on: August 02, 2010, 12:33:59 AM »
1. In my intro I am working on it has some Gimp-generated "Supernova" effects, that, when converted to 256-colors look atrocious. Any way to make it look right?

2.How would I make the frames fade in and out? Would I actually have to sprite it getting darker and darker, or is there a quick way?

Big flashy effects made in gimp dont usualy stay after the color conversion. Are you trying to do them on a character sprite? Perhaps you should try to make it its own image and see if you can still get the look, that way you can add it in as a helper...

Fade out how? Like gradualy? Yeah thats going to take time, but you can darken the sprites using fighter factory's palete editor, then save the image with each time youve darkend the colors untill you've faded it to black.

They are both for a MUGEN intro. Wasn't there some kind of idea that you could chop the image into pieces (the tutorial had a picture of Bryan Fury) to preserve quality? Would that work?

Yes that would work by making a bunch of explosions go off all at once but, there might be issues with colors not matching up correctly with each section because when you decrease the colors to 256 on the different parts of the FX sometimes they will be different hues & you will notice a line threw the FX which would look worse then color loss - I would suggest just excepting the limitations of the mugen engine & make the whole fx with a little color loss @-)

I might have found something, I was making them straight into PCX files, but the damage is reduced when I put it into PNG then into 256, and back again.

I'll just do that then. Thanks for the help.
