Title: Forum Database Deactivation
Post by: Excursion on May 04, 2014, 01:48:03 AM
(http://www.infinitymugenteam.com/images/deactivate.png)
We have decided to deactivate the forum's out-of-date, difficult to keep on top of database. Links die and crop up all the time, and to keep it truly up-to-date and useful, it would have to be one or two individual's full-time jobs. Since we have no dedicated person's willing to keep it up to date all the time the decision to deactivate it was an easy one. :-??

Thank you to all of you that have contributed to making it what it was and a big thanks to the current and previous moderators and team members we had on board for a short while that spent some good quality time to sort out, checking links, updating links, and adding images to links to make it easier for the forum regular to find what they needed desired. Your work was appreciated and will live on in the annals of the Abyss.

For those looking for good, up-to-date databases, you can look into Nunor's MFG database (http://network.mugenguild.com/guild/start.html) and/or into The MUGEN Database (http://mugen.wikia.com/wiki/The_MUGEN_Database).

Why not just make an announcement for the database that links are not actively checked and people may come across dead ones that they are more than welcome to request in the request section?

That way, at least the reference is there for people on this forum, not to mention, it respects all the work that had been done to that point available to at least be seen.

If any forum section needs deactivation, its the Japanese one due to major inactivity.

Volzilla, maybe you got it wrong.
We RESPECT all the work done by the users, its not that. We just think that if the database contains a lot of old and/or broken link, it would have little to no usage. Its better to just say "hey, feel free to enter, but the many links are broken".

It wasn't a one person decision. One team member suggested it to the admins, and they made a pool to see the other members thoughts about it.

Part of me always expected to see the database shut down eventually...there were just too many links that didn't work anymore.

My big question:  What happens to this icon?

Well maybe trying to update is justa bad idea. Maybe start a new.  Link the news section and the new database. Let people update that section freely like we do the wiki.

I like that idea, but also have it locked somehow too, last thing you want is someone else with a grudge, spamming on the links just for petty jokes

It's been removed from the post form.

but that is the thing, people can't enter to look around. not viewable for guests or basic members.

the work i was talking about before was people that listed, organized and made images. i can understand no longer supporting the ability to keep links up to date. but i'm saying it'd be a good thing to at least keep as a reference for people to look at...especially considering all the hard work put in to organize it before.

Some of the images were removed/deleted as they were uploaded to an image sharing site years ago and have since been removed. Others are still there but will share the same fate in a couple year's time. Locking the DB and leaving it in the view of everyone isn't feasible because of that. It was team decision to remove it so it is done.

BTW, the open source sections of the DB have been moved and are child boards (sub-sections) of the MUGEN Lost & Found board.

I regret much read this message.
Also is how difficult this decision. Keep a forum requires people permeated with the cause.

I hope to make the best decision.
If something I can help with ideas you can contact me.

Just run the database off the wiki. People have free run on the wiki and its good because each page has its own save state so if some did go crazy its an easy fix.

Well, we can still use the Mugen Guild Database:
