Title: Release Party: Wolverine
Post by: The Anvil on May 01, 2009, 04:18:23 AM
Wolverine

Sprites by The Anvil
Programming by Kong & Acey

When i first started creating in mugen i wanted to start off with something small to get a feel for creating, and i always loved the unmasked sprites capcom had done, so i decided to try an unmasked wolverine character. Then i had the thought that when you hit the taunt button he would take his mask off/put it on depending on how you already had it. So enjoy Wolverine ;)

someone started a character like this and gave me permission to finish him one day.  :O*D
BACK TO THE CHARACTER:
he has everything i was waiting for, glad to see you used the sprites with the bike too.   ^^(PM)^
i think i have seen one bug with the masK but it was so fast i m not sure.
SO my only complaint are the palettes, lol. He needs a lot of them because they areN 't good.
Best wolverine ever released.  ^^(PM)^  ::salute::

This character is pretty nice.
The option to put his mask on/off is something I haven't seen before with a Wolverine, Nice touch on the character :)

Lé Bugs/Feedback:

- Berseker barrage can be really spammable, Take a look at this:
I don't know if I should call it an Infinite or a bug with the Attack.

- The crouch stand animation goes faster when Wolverine's mask is taken off, Why?
 (http://i40.tinypic.com/jq0sg1.gif)   (http://i39.tinypic.com/6pq6o6.gif)

- If its Maskless Wolverine, Why not put a Maskless Wolverine Hyper Portrait?
Since we already have another Wolverine (With the mask) That has the same Hyper portrait, Just a suggestion.

New Feedback:
Well I've played MvC2 on my Dreamcast Emulator last night and I played with masked wolverine a few minutes ago, and this is what I found:

- His Berseker Barrage is faster than in MvC2 IIRC

- Berseker Barrage can be a pain to deal with when you are in the corner and Wolverine is doing it against you (Thats just my opinion)

- Medium kick in the air is very spammable I can do it fast after eachother.

- Medium kick in the air doesn't have "Maskless" Wolverine sprites (Even if he is in Maskless mode)

- (I think I'm confusing him now with another character so blame me for that): I can do a throw in the air after a combo /:O

Being a guy who generally prefers seeing Wolverine with his mask on, I agree with this.

Review:
+mask changing modes is cool espically the fact it changes hypers
+motorcycle ending
+pretty fun to play as but but things like the weak defence and having screen jump around everywhere ruins the quality  :|
- berserker barage spammable
-controlable while dead
-really annoying to fight against in a  hi jump compatable stage on team mode because hes always jumping around everywhere and you cant see whats going on  on the ground  *Iceman ThumbsDown!*
-the motorcycle ending is cool but when he rides away it lkinda looks like his riding a tricycle if you know what i mean  ;*)) (maybe get him to hunch over more and have smoke coming out of the tail pipe or somthing to give it more 'attitude')
-dies easily and usually first due to low defence
-unmasked wolverine needs a unmasked hyper portrait (at the least in the unmasked woverine exclusive hypers)

overall theres still alot to fix up but if  it is fixed up it will definitly be the best wolverine out there  :)

Well, Sir Anvil's original intent was to make MvC Wolverine without a mask.

In a previous EoH beta, he had a different stance when he would put the mask back on, but that was taken out.

As is like I mentioned before, when you change mask preferene, his hypers change as well.

I was a little curious about the hyper BG too but the character still rules. Very unique with the mask coming on and off.

I didn't even notice the Hyper background was missing because it references the one in the EoH screenpack and of course I was testing him in EoH. We'll get that fixed up here in a bit.

@ EXShadow, would you mind listing what work you feel still needs to be done? I don't know what to fix if all you say is "work still needs to be done."

sure bud well as i stated theres no super bg also his light standing punch goes into light crouching punch? it does that for a couple others i don't know if that was the way it was suppose to be but i noticed your sentry isn't like that, just those things and a couple others ill list them later

@ ExShadow, that sure is a lot more help than what you said before. Thanks. Sometimes even I miss things editing the 50 thousand characters of Kong to match project specifications.

Here is a quick patch that fixes the hyper background and removes the auto combos. I'm wondering if he's missing his launcher FX too but I'll have to look into that later.

I recorded a video review showing Wolverine in action.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KNTBgBFTHk# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KNTBgBFTHk#)

The video will show off some of his special/hyper moves in AI watch mode versus himself, then a better look at all of them in training mode...including how the mask removal and replacing affects game play.

Also, there are annotations embedded into the video playback for partial discussion, as well as a more detailed written review in the more info section.

Yup, the stance is in the character as an easy accessible option for those who can do a simple number change in Fighter Factory.

i have noticed when fight in my mugen again Basara (from Samurai shodown), after every throw of is blade boomerang (i dont know what weapon really is sorry ^^") and hit me, Wolvie going stuck untill i take another punch... why?

Probably because Basara is trying to reference a statedef in Wolverine that typically doesn't exist in non-SamuSho characters but because of Wolverine's multiple modes there is a statedef number there. Frailties of having so many mugen characters where authors don't all follow the exact same number standard for their statedefs (which is near impossible anyways.)

Welcome new member .

No need for comment like this . If someone thinks this is the best Wolverine they have a right to their opinion . Just like you have a right to say Sandler's is the best . But telling someone to base their coding on someone elses is uncalled for . Not everyone creates the same style

Anvil , Acey & Kong did a good job on this character & did it their style .

BTW he does freeze in mid air when he gets hit at times for me also . He just stays their until he gets hit again . As of right now their is no rhyme or reason when it happens . I'll try to figure it out better & let you guys know .

I agree, Sanders made a great normal Wolverine, as did ArielAlexCo where as Vyn made a wonderful Boneclaw Wolverine. Unfortunately since Sander's version was made for DOS mugen there have been a few too many translation errors as well as sprite issues. That coupled with the fact that many authors don't wish for their characters to be a part of the MvC project necessitated that we make our own.

Interesting release.

BUT...

As unmasked Wolverine, if he is crouching and another character jumps over him while he's still crouching, he'll get stuck in a weird pose with his mask on.  He doesn't seem to turn all the way.  And when standing up, he doesn't have a turn animation at all for when characters jump over him.

The collision boxes for his attacks while unmasked are messed up compared to the boxes for when he is masked.  The blue boxes are different between masked and unmasked modes as well.

His walking has sound effects while masked but not while unmasked.  And his jumping has more animations when masked compared to when unmasked.  Oh, and his claws go in and out when he takes off/puts on the mask.

In both masked and unmasked modes, sometimes tapping an attack button real fast will unleash a crouching attack.  For example, tapping the medium kick button really fast will occasionally result in a crouching medium kick attack.

Why is QCF+K Tornado Claw?   /:O

Oh, and I miss his taunt.   ???

Graet char for mugen.
Originaly planed by Loganir as "Logan", become fantastic finished by your hands, The Anvil.

But I think he needs more defence and agressive AI because he is WOLVERINE "arrrrgg"  \-/o, the rest is perfect.

When Wolverine is in Maskless Mode, after the second hit in the Stand Medium Punch, miss one sprite in the animation.

Good char.
2 issues.
When he is maskless, his walking has no sound. When he is masked you can hear his footsteps.
When he changes modes he retracts his claws. Doesn't seem necessary as you don't see him extend them again, they just appear.

This is actually something I mentioned in an earlier post, along with the collision boxes and some animations being different between the masked and maskless modes.

I hope the creator takes notice of the input in this thread.

This is actually something I mentioned in an earlier post, along with the collision boxes and some animations being different between the masked and maskless modes.

I hope the creator takes notice of the input in this thread.

I've already gone through the thread and made all of the updates, alot of good stuff, I can't thank you guys enough, especially you Dr. Zaius. Only item I have left is figuring out the problem this Wolverine has with throws whose coding uses shortcuts (when a throw is missing proper Change States Wolverine will freeze.)

That's good news.

I like him and all. I like the concept of taking the mask on and off but everything about him is just too fast. No diss but its just too ridiculously fast. other than that he's great
